Downware
Downware is a first-person psychological horror game set in a dystopian cyberpunk world. As John, you must navigate a series of apartment rooms in a tense, puzzle-driven “escape-the-room” style, all while evading a malfunctioning cyborg enforcer determined to eliminate you. The game blends atmospheric horror with sci-fi elements, creating a unique experience, albeit at times quite frustrating.
Pros:
✅ Immersive and richly detailed cyberpunk setting
✅ Clever, well-integrated puzzles
✅ Frequent checkpoints help mitigate trial-and-error fatigue
✅ Excellent ambient sound design that heightens tension
✅ Strong visual style with a rich, detailed cyberpunk city setting
Cons:
❌ Lengthy and repetitive hiding sequences that drag down pacing, as John constantly has to hide from the cyborg that chases him
❌ Stealth mechanics are clunky and often unforgiving
❌ Despite the beautiful worldbuilding, exploration is limited almost entirely to apartment interiors
❌ Puzzle-solving under constant threat from the cyborg breaks immersion and leads to frustration
❌ Poor English localization, with frequent grammar issues and typos
❌ Lack of a hint system can make some puzzle sections overly punishing
❌ Very expensive for the 3h of gameplay that it offers
While Downware shows a lot of promise with its compelling aesthetic and tense premise, its execution leaves much to be desired. The tension, meant to enhance the horror, often feels more tedious than terrifying due to poorly implemented stealth and relentless pressure during puzzle segments. With better balancing and localization improvements, this could evolve into a standout title, but for now, it struggles under the weight of its own ambitions.
