You step in the shoes of Reo, an 18 year-old high-school student who gets rejected by his childhood friend after finally confessing his feelings to her. Not long after, when Reo’s family decides to visit a maid cafe, he accidentally finds out that his strict, rule-abiding classmate and class president Sugawara is working there cross-dressed as a maid, largely against his will. At school, Sugawara is Reo’s arch-nemesis, who frequently scolds Reo for being late and neglecting his studies. Hence Reo sees Sugawara’s secret as an opportunity to pressure his classmate into helping him win over the girl he has a crush on, who happens to work alongside Sugawara in the student council.
What starts as a slightly cruel arrangement (though Reo never truly intends to expose Sugawara) gradually evolves into something much more heartfelt. As Reo and Sugawara spend more time together plotting ways to win the heart of Reo’s love interest, they slowly start warming up towards one another, uncovering an unexpected connection. Beneath their constant bickering, they start to notice sides of each other they had never seen before. The story does a great job of slowly shifting their dynamic from antagonistic to genuinely warm, making their growing closeness feel natural and earned rather than rushed.
The writing is lighthearted and playful, with plenty of soft and fuzzy moments as well as many other funny situations. Reo and Sugawara share great chemistry, fueled by their constant teasing. This is complemented by the lively dynamics of Reo’s family, especially his sharp-tongued younger sister and his energetic four-year-old twin siblings, who constantly bring a smile to your face. While the game doesn’t feature voice acting, the soundtrack more than makes up for it with very catchy and memorable music that fits the tone perfectly.
The game’s visuals are decent and colourful, but nothing out of the ordinary. The CG backgrounds are nicely illustrated, and the characters are brought to life through animated transitions of their facial expressions.
Overall, How to Melt a Maiden’s Heart can be a great choice if you’re looking for a short, feel-good read. The narration is sweet and emotionally satisfying, and the character chemistry is well-handled.
