Kinsfolk

Kinsfolk is one of those rare games that doesn’t just tell a story. It makes you really *feel* it with every fiber of your being. It’s an intensely emotional journey that explores themes of love, grief, and the difficult path toward healing.

You step into the role of a new father trying to cope with the loss of his wife, all while shouldering the responsibility of caring for his newborn child alone. As part of his attempt to heal, he embarks on a journey to reconnect with his own estranged father. Along the way, he shares his memories with his baby, narrating moments from his childhood as well as gentle recollections of his late wife.

The narration is intense and heavy with grief. Much like it happens in real life after losing a loved one, everything he encounters along the journey evokes memories of her. Although she never appears as a character, her presence is deeply felt throughout the story, almost hauntingly. By speaking of her to his child, he seems to be trying to keep her alive through these memories, allowing his son to know her in some small way.

The pressure of needing to be strong for his child transpires through the narration. From time to time, he slows down to soothe his cooing baby, gently reassuring him that he will always be there to protect him. He imagines his own father’s stern voice questioning whether he has the strength to care for a child on his own, yet this is merely a reflection of his own self-doubt and fears of vulnerability.

The emotional weight of the story is conveyed beautifully through the exceptional voice acting. Every voice tremor and whispered reassurance to his cooing baby sinks deeply into you as you move forward in this journey.

Gameplay-wise, Kinsfolk is a linear walking simulator with some light puzzle elements and a longer platforming sequence. None of these are difficult (though the platforming controls can feel a tad awkward), and the focus always remains on the emotional discovery. The chill soundtrack perfectly complements the slow pace of the game, drawing you even deeper into its story.

Ultimately, Kinsfolk delivers a profound message about healing: the slow process of reconciling with one’s past mistakes, the choice to forgive, the bittersweet pain of remembering a lost loved one, and the strength required to move forward despite it all. The game wonderfully captures all of these aspects within its hour-long experience, filled with sorrow, responsibility, forgiveness, and love, while also inviting players to reflect on what fatherhood truly means.
