Nom Nom: Cozy Forest Café
On the outside, Nom Nom: Cozy Forest Café might seem to be a traditional café management game, but at its core, it’s a cozy game centered on unlocking decorations, customizing the dishes you serve, and personalizing your space. It deliberately avoids common management mechanics such as ordering ingredients, upgrading cooking devices, or setting prices for your dishes. Instead, the game invites you to focus on creativity, offering a charming and relaxed approach to running a café.
The gameplay loop is straightforward, thus very easy to pick up. You take orders from adorable animal customers and prepare their food and drinks by playing a simple rhythm mini-game. After completing the mini-game, you customize the order by selecting its visual details, then serve it to the customer, wait for them to finish, and collect your income.
You can engage in brief dialogues with customers, which usually consist of a few lines about their thoughts or recent activities. While this adds a light slice-of-life feel, there is no overarching narrative or character backstory tying these interactions together. Even when dialogues offer multiple response options, they typically result in only a single alternate line of text, with no lasting impact on subsequent interactions.
The coins earned from fulfilling customer orders can be spent in the shop to buy furniture items and decorations for the café. For every four orders completed for a given customer, one new furniture item becomes available for purchase in the shop. This unlocking system can feel grindy, especially as progress depends on repeatedly completing the same-ish mini-game. Moreover, the slow transitions between different stages of order preparation contribute to an overall slow-paced experience.
The rhythm mini-game is designed to be easy and accessible even for players unfamiliar with the genre. You only need to press one button (the space bar or the left mouse button) and time it to when notes reach the center of the screen. Each mini-game lasts around 45 seconds and is tied to a specific dish type. The note patterns are fixed rather than randomly generated, making them easy to learn and play. However, the limited variety of songs and this minigame not being randomized can easily increase the feeling of repetitiveness. On the positive side, your performance directly affects how much money you earn, so improving through muscle memory is rewarding.
There are ten customer types in total, each unlocking a dish category such as coffee, cookies, boba, sandwiches, or donuts. With only ten dish types available, the selection feels somewhat limited, especially given the extensive creative control that you have when it comes to personalizing your space or the dishes created. For dishes, you can choose the type of mugs, bread, toppings, ingredients, and other decorative elements you want to apply to them. For your cafe, you can customize any piece of furniture, wall, or floor tiles, change their colors, or even add glitter to everything. You can also create your own pixel art designs to place as paintings on the walls or as stickers on your dishes.
In terms of achievements, Nom Nom: Cozy Forest Café is pretty grindy. I would roughly estimate that reaching 100% completion takes around 30 hours, as the achievements require completing at least 40 orders per customer. But, since daily customers are randomly selected from those already unlocked, the actual number of orders needed is likely higher.
The game is not entirely bug-free, but the issues encountered are minor and not game-breaking, with developers actively addressing them. Probably the most noticeable inconvenience is the inability to stop mid-day without losing that day’s progress. While some data is saved, customers and time reset upon reloading. With a workday lasting roughly 20 minutes, this is not that much of a problem, though not being able to quit when you want still feels rather restrictive.
Overall, Nom Nom: Cozy Forest Café is designed as a wholesome and comforting experience that invites you to unleash your creative self-expression at your own pace. There are no stressful timers or complex systems to manage, and the charming customer interactions and extended customization options encourage relaxation.
