Squeakross: Home Squeak Home

Squeakross: Home Squeak Home is an incredibly wholesome and joyful puzzle game that masterfully blends picross (nonogram) solving with home decoration. With an enormous amount of content, highly customizable gameplay, and family-friendly presentation, it easily ranks among the best picross games on Steam. I could go as far as firmly placing it in the top three of the genre, alongside Voxelgram and Pictopix.

The sheer amount of content is impressive: the game features almost 900 puzzles across a wide range of sizes and difficulties. Most importantly, they are very well designed: every puzzle can be solved cleanly through logic alone, without guessing. Large nonograms packed with tiny, widely spaced clues (like endless 1s and 2s) are often frustrating, as they rely heavily on tedious counting, but Squeakross largely avoids this. On top of that, the tutorial is excellent, going far beyond basic rules to teach practical strategies for approaching larger and more complex puzzles, which is especially helpful for newcomers to the genre.

Every completed puzzle rewards you with a new furniture item to decorate your home. Solving the same puzzle in challenge mode (on a larger grid) unlocks additional color variations and allows you to place multiple instances of that item. As you progress, new rooms become available, along with a wide variety of decorative elements. You can turn each room into a kitchen, bathroom, or living space, or even subdivide rooms using walls and partitions.

Squeakross also shines through its quality-of-life features: you can find small but thoughtful touches everywhere. For example, whenever you unlock a new clothing item, you can instantly try it on without having to navigate to the character customization menu, then apply it permanently with a secondary click if you like it.

Puzzle-solving itself is also supported by a wide range of helper mechanics, which makes the game suitable for players of all skill levels. There’s an error checker to catch logical mistakes. Row and column hints gray out once solved, while other visual indicators highlight lines where progress can still be logically deduced or where X marks are missing. All of these aids can be disabled individually for players who prefer more of a challenge. On the contrary, additional options (such as automatically filling solved lines with crosses) can make the game even more accessible. On top of that, three separate helper mechanics can be accessed at any time by interacting with the adorable rat in the corner of the screen, allowing you to reveal a cell, show all placement possibilities on a row / column, or highlight all mistakes on the board.

Beyond puzzles and decoration (for your home, your rat companion, and also the backgrounds of menus, puzzles, and loading screens), the game includes a surprisingly charming educational element. A dedicated section delivers scripted emails filled with fun facts about rats, photos of these lovable animals, and links to real-world charities and fundraisers. These messages are never intrusive and always playful. You even receive silly spam emails, which, unlike in real life, are actually fun to read.

Squeakross: Home Squeak Home excels in all aspects: brilliant puzzle design, a generous and varied selection of puzzles, extensive decoration options, lots of customizable settings to tailor the gameplay according to your preferences, and an irresistibly cute visual style. It’s a rare example of a puzzle game that is both relaxing and deeply polished. This makes it an easy recommendation for fans of nonograms or anyone looking for a cozy, feel-good experience to sink dozens of hours into (around 90 hours for 100% completion).
