Shablon: Color Patterns
Shablon Color Patterns is a wonderfully relaxing puzzle game where you’re given a board filled with tiles of various shapes and colors, along with a puzzle piece you need to drag into the right spot. The thing is that the piece doesn’t directly match the shapes that you see on the board, but it is actually made from their complementary shapes. Think of it as filling in the negative space: if the board shows an empty circle at a certain position, your piece holds a filled circle for that same spot. Dropping it in the right spot completes the shapes and clears the cells. Your goal is to clear the whole board until no visible tiles remain. This turned out to be a surprisingly satisfying and calming experience, much more than I had expected.
This core mechanic is straightforward and minimalistic, but it carries the gameplay by being used in a few clever variations. “Level mode“ (the standard experience) introduces new colors and shapes gradually, so levels slowly grow more complex, although, rest assured, they never reach a state where they feel overwhelming. The “Chaos mode“ shakes things up by modifying the board after each placement: some levels rotate the board entirely every few moves, others swap out tiles or change colors while keeping shapes, or a mix of all the above. Then there’s “Challenge mode,“ which adds timers to test your pattern recognition speed. Either you get a limited window to place each piece, or you’re racing to clear the whole level before time runs out. For some of these modes, you’ll also need to complete a preliminary stage (not timed) where you first fill the board before you can start clearing it.
Even though each of these game modes only has a few preset levels available, the game doesn’t lack content at all. In total, there are around 90 levels that play with these mechanics, with nearly half of them dedicated to the timed challenges. Completing them will take you roughly seven hours. A “sandbox mode“ also exists, where you can customize the board size, colors used, and shape types to your liking, giving you an endless stream of procedurally generated puzzles. You can also choose from several color palettes to change the visual style to your liking.
If you enjoy casual puzzle games with a beautiful, minimalist aesthetic, this little gem is well worth your time. It works perfectly whether you want to zone out and relax or give your focus a solid test.
