Tiny Tape Store
Tiny Tape Store is a very chill and beautifully crafted idle game, filled to the brim with retro nostalgia thanks to its charming pixel art and fantastic synthwave soundtrack. It’s the kind of idler that requires very little hands-on interaction. You start with a small, empty space and gradually build it into a thriving VHS rental shop. Your character takes care of everything automatically: restocking shelves, sweeping the floor, handling transactions at the counter, and checking in retired tapes while customers browse the shop. There are also a few optional minigames triggered by clicking on the main character, such as manually rewinding tapes, selecting what movies to restock from multi-choice options, or inputting a code to unlock the safe that holds the daily earnings.
The decoration system is minimalistic, yet satisfying enough. You can personalize your shop with plants, lamps, posters, windows, arcade cabinets, and vending machines, plus customize your floor and wall tiles. Each item you place boosts your popularity, drawing in more customers. You can also expand the store area, but only up to three times.
Even though it’s designed to run in the background, Tiny Tape Store looks so sweet that I’d often catch myself just staring at the screen. Watching the shopkeeper work, seeing the quirky companion cat follow them or hide behind shelves and the counter, and listening to the soundtrack is incredibly comforting. It truly feels like a warm hug from the past.
If you enjoy hunting achievements, it is a very quick and easy completion. You can get all achievements in about 10–12 hours of idle time or just a few minutes of active playtime as the game progresses in offline mode too. Overall, Tiny Tape Store is an absolute joy for a cozy background game.
